Do you have problems with your hot water system? This can often be an annoying, unexpected surprise when you cannot get hot water to work.

If your hot water isn’t working, there are a few reasons which you can check.

1. Do you have cold water?

When you are having water issues, you need to establish whether this is just affecting the hot water, or whether it is impacting the cold water too.

If you have cold water but no hot water, the problem is something to do with the hot water system.

If you have neither cold or hot water, make sure to check the other taps that are on your property. The problem may just be with one tap, or there may be no water coming from any of the taps on the property.

2. Leaking water

Sometimes hot water tanks or the pipes will start to leak, which can cause the hot water not to work.

If this is the case, you will need to get a plumber to look at your hot water tank and the pipes in order to diagnose the cause of the leak and fix it.

3. Valve

If you have no water coming from any taps on your property, you will need to go to your main meter and see if the valve is turned on.

If the issue is isolated to just one tap within the property, check if the isolation valve is on.

4. Electrical faults

One of the common reasons for a hot water system not working is a blown fuse.

Check your switchboard and see if the hot water switch is on. If it is off, you may need to call an electrician to look at the circuit board and check the wiring.

If the switch is on, you may have blown a fuse. Again, the solution to this is to call an electrician.

5. Temperature

Check the temperature settings in your hot water system. If the water is not hot enough, adjust the settings, and check the temperature of the water in one hour. This can often resolve issues with hot water.

To do this, you will need to adjust the thermostat on your hot water system to increase the temperature.

6. Hot water system is old

Sometimes the reason hot water systems stop working is simply because the system is old. Hot water systems will generally last for 10 to 15 years, however, they will start to experience problems after 10 years.

If this is the case, you may need to replace your entire hot water system. While this can seem expensive, it will be cheaper than having to keep on paying for repairs.
